In Uganda's refugee settlements like Kyaka II, malaria casts a long shadow over families seeking safety from conflict—claiming young lives, eroding health, and hindering progress. As program partners with Give Refugees Hope International (GRHI), official distributors for LivFul's Staytec lotion, and integrators orchestrating the full ecosystem, Loaf of Bread (LOB) is harnessing innovative technology, rigorous research, and compassionate care to break this cycle. We're starting with proven malaria prevention to keep communities healthy and resilient, paving the way for agricultural training, vocational skills, and connections to global markets—transforming vulnerable refugees into thriving, independent contributors.

Kyaka II Health Information Session
The Challenge in Uganda's Refugee Settlements

Home to over 1.5 million refugees—primarily from the Democratic Republic of Congo—Uganda's settlements like Kyaka II face malaria as their leading health crisis. It drives up to 47% of clinic visits and 32% of deaths, turning places of refuge into zones of vulnerability.

Stagnant waters, crowded living, and limited access amplify transmission, with prevalence rates hitting 36.6% across sites. For children under five, it's often devastating, locking families in a cycle of illness and dependency.

Yet, Uganda's national story offers hope: Integrated efforts slashed malaria rates from 42% in 2009 to 9% by 2018. By prioritizing prevention now, we can replicate this success—starting with health to unlock productivity, education, and economic independence for refugees.

The Ripple of Impact

This goes beyond repellent—it's a catalyst for transformation. Topical repellents like IR3535® have demonstrated strong efficacy in preventing bites, complementing Uganda's vector control wins that have slashed incidence in refugee areas by up to 50%.

By 2028, we project 596,161 Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) saved through healthier families and empowered communities. Our early focus is direct prevention, with 80+% of resources committed to frontline program delivery by 2027.

To sustain and expand this impact, Loaf of Bread (LOB) is cultivating strategic partnerships and sponsorships that underwrite operational capacity, technology integration, and program growth. These collaborations fuel the pathway from health security to agricultural training, vocational skills, and marketplace connections—unlocking productive independence for refugee families.

Our Mission: Integrated Ecosystems for Lasting Abundance

Guided by faith, stewardship, and a commitment to seven-generation sustainability, LOB orchestrates integrated solutions across healthcare, agriculture, vocation, and education. As program partners with GRHI, we're leading the Uganda Refugee Malaria Prevention Pilot—a rigorous, observational prospective cohort study evaluating Staytec's (20% IR3535® topical repellent) efficacy in curbing transmission.

Collaborating with the Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) as study sponsor and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Public Health and PARAVEC Laboratory, this initiative launched in September 2025. We're enrolling 600 participants (100 households) in a 6-month trial through April 2026, leveraging our Catalyst platform for seamless data tracking, repellent distribution, and compliance monitoring. Staytec delivers 14+ hours of protection with a single daily 3ml application, packaged in user-friendly sachets and bottles.

From GRHI's Level 3 Health Clinic, we provide free testing, treatment, and education—scaling to 960,000 daily participants by 2028 across multiple camps. This health foundation will enable our next phases: agricultural programs for food security, vocational training for skills, and marketplace linkages for economic empowerment—shifting refugees from dependency to thriving self-sufficiency.
